Behind the Making of our 'Good Night, Gorilla' Ice Cream

Thank you to everyone who submitted a flavor idea -- we LOVED reading through them all! We had some solid representation from Harry Potter (6 entries), Anne of Green Gables, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Blueberries for Sal, and (surprisingly?) Dragons Love Tacos (4 entries each). All in all, 105 different books were represented by ice cream ideas, and we wish we could have made so many of these flavors!

We loved the flavors that captured some of the popular children’s book canon, as well as the flavors that captured idiosyncratic favorites. We had readers of all ages submit ideas.

After receiving nearly 150 Scoops and Stories flavor submissions for our inaugural year, our Test Kitchen team narrowed it down to 4 finalists that we offered up to the public to vote for on Instagram. It was neck and neck between Good Night Gorilla and Forever Friends (inspired by Frog and Toad Forever) but in the end, Good Night, Gorilla squeaked ahead.

We knew that this would be an insanely popular flavor because how can you go wrong with the banana, peanut butter, chocolate combo? And who can resist that mischievous little gorilla of Peggy Rathmann’s best-selling children’s book?

Our Test Kitchen already had a somewhat similar flavor, Banana Peanut Butter Cup, in our repertoire, but we branched out a little for this new literary flavor.

The fresh banana base is the same, and we lucked out this time because the bananas were just about to be overripe at the store – which yields the sweetest and truest banana flavor!

For our peanut butter ribbon, we tried out four different peanut butter variations – and ended up choosing one that is mostly pure peanut butter with just a touch of coconut oil to help the texture when adding to the ice cream. We wanted to make sure it would stay soft in the ice cream but also taste strongly of peanuts!

For the fudge chunks, we pulled out an old recipe of ours from a past Adventure Club flavor, Cherry Chocolate Chunk, and improved it to make it easier to work with. We make giant slabs of actual fudge candy, dice them, and roll them in cocoa powder to prevent them from becoming a mega-mass of stickiness. These are divine!

We only had a few days between finding out the winning flavor and bringing the finished flavor to the shop, but we did it!

This flavor will debut on Tuesday, September 24th. It’s a limited run flavor, in scoops only, so make sure you come on by while it lasts! We will also be hosting a Library Collaboration Tasting Event on Thursday, September 26th, at our Midtown Scoop Shop from 4:30-7:30p. Buy a scoop and bring it over to the librarians for a perfectly curated book suggestion.
