Artist Spotlight: Kelly Leonard

For the month of August, we have Kelly Leonard’s art up in the Midtown Shop and we were excited to learn more about her, her art, and her life in Alaska. Kelly was born in the Philippines, but has been in Alaska for the past 47 years. She began her journey with art about five years ago, as a way to relax after long days homeschooling her four children. She was hooked immediately!

Her inspiration for this collection was Alaska, but with a new take, as she didn’t want to create more of the fireweed mountainscapes that are already out there. Kelly typically works in acrylics, but has been known to play around with crayons, ink, and even paper collage. This collection is a selection of paintings printed on aluminum.

Kelly loves the entire state of Alaska, but is partial to Valdez, as that was her home for a long time while she and her husband commercially fished out of the Prince William Sound. She also spent some time living in Girdwood, another area close to her heart.

Her favorite Wild Scoops flavors are anything chocolate! You can see more of her art on Instagram and Facebook @hippyinacardigannart. If you’re around Alaska, you can check her out and purchase pieces at these local galleries:
